Industries Served Nonprofit organizations have a myriad of issues to deal with when it comes to their financial operations and reporting. State government and in some cases federal government all want financial reporting in a certain format. In addition, a nonprofit Board and management need to have timely, accurate information to fulfill their fiduciary duty of fiscal management. Combine this with limited working capital, breakeven budgets, limited administrative resources and strict third party oversight, and you have one of the toughest situations any organization can face, profit or nonprofit. eCratchit’s management has over 20 years experience counseling, advising and auditing nonprofit organizations. We can hit the ground running when working with nonprofits. Whether it is cleaning up past issues to have efficient, clean audits or setting up the reporting structure to best manage the operations of the Organization, eCratchit has done it numerous times. We take on the responsibility to do it right. Case Study A nonprofit with donor resources and a few government contracts is behind in its day to day accounting, cash isn’t reconciled and management isn’t sure if restrictions on donor gifts have been spent properly. Government and independent auditors had a difficult time during last year’s audit and this year doesn’t look any better. Management and the Board haven’t seen a financial report in years. eCratchit is hired and rolls up its sleeves, cleaning up past issues, preparing for the audit and getting internal reporting up to date. Discussions with management lead to budget vs. actual financials by cost center. For the first time the management team has received information monthly and has peace of mind that restrictions and contracts are being followed. The independent audit runs smoothly, reducing costs and with no reportable conditions. The B.E.L.L. Foundation, Inc. (Boston, NYC, Baltimore) B.E.L.L. which operates Summer and After School Programs in Boston, New York City and Baltimore has grown from $4M to $20M in gross revenue in the last 4 years. eCratchit implemented its accounting processes, cleaned up past issues and stepped in as CFO as the organization grew. “eCratchit has been an invaluable member of our Management Team. Ed and his group are extremely professional and knowledgeable about nonprofit issues. eCratchit worked as liaison with B.E.L.L.’s auditors to make sure the process ran smoothly and that there were no surprises. With eCratchit on the job it is just one less thing I need to worry about. eCratchit has provided us with expertise and stability to grow substantially in the last 4 years. We could not have done it without them”. Earl Martin Phalen, Orphan Foundation of America (Sterling, VA) Orphan Foundation of America, Reston, VA. In 1981, the late Joseph Rivers, a former foster youth from the Syracuse area, started the Orphan Foundation of America (OFA). His goal was simple-- help orphans and foster youth as they transition from foster care to young adulthood, with particular emphasis on helping these young men and women attend college and vocational school. OFA has truly raised national awareness of foster care issues and comprehensive services for older youth are being implemented nationwide. Each year OFA and its scholarship partners award more funding and provide a stronger safety net for those pursuing post-secondary education. Youth without family support face unique challenges on the road to adulthood. Many have experienced years of abuse and neglect, while others lost loving parents to illness or accidents. While foster care tries to provide a stable environment, for many it is a series of group homes and shelters, leaving many foster youth ill-equipped for life on their own.
“We were in a bind. Our previous year's independent audit was costly and painful for the Organization. We were having trouble finding anyone with practical, hands on nonprofit financial operating experience. eCratchit and Ed Mulherin came in, set up their systems, cleaned up our books and managed the audit process. The auditors were in and out in one week and everything went smoothly. I can focus on our mission and worry about accounting less with eCratchit.” Eileen McCaffery, CDA Collaborative Learning Projects, Inc. (Cambridge, MA) CDA Collaborative Learning Projects, Inc. is a non-profit organization, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They are committed to improving the effectiveness of international actors who provide humanitarian assistance, engage in peace practice, and are involved in supporting sustainable development. “We are a small program-driven nonprofit that receives funds from various international organizations and require a fairly sophisticated accounting process for such a small organization. eCratchit set up our system, created structure and is always available at a moment's notice if I have any questions. They are extremely professional and it is much more cost effective to utilize eCratchit for both bill-paying and bookkeeping than to hire the staff necessary to carry out those duties in-house. Their online systems are really cutting edge and make my job easier. They provide us with bookkeeping, accounting and controller services for less.” Deborah Zawalich, |
